Anatomy of the piriformis muscle

The piriformis muscle is one the the muscles that externally rotates the hip along with the gluteus muscles and the superior and inferior gemelli muscles.

The piriformis muscle is a flat msucle that lies underneath the gluteus medius muscle, with its origins from the sacrum and insertion onto the greater trochanter of the femur.

In some cases, the sciatic nerve can bifurcate the piriformis muscle and this anatomical variant can cause buttock and leg pain similar to sciatica, but is termed “Piriformis Syndrome”.
